Digital Skills: developing a programme for UNDP

Introduction

Pista Ventures, contracted by The Maker Space on a groundbreaking skills development project funded by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP). The initiative aimed to harness the power of digital technology to empower youth in townships and rural areas, equipping them with the skills needed for the modern workforce.

Challenges

The primary challenge was overcoming the digital divide that leaves many youth in township and rural areas without access to technology and the internet. Additionally, there was a need to tailor educational content to be relevant and engaging for young learners, many of whom may not have had formal exposure to digital tools or the language of technology.

Understanding

A thorough understanding of the target demographic was crucial. This involved not just recognizing the gaps in access and education but also appreciating the socio-economic factors that could influence learners’ engagement and success. It meant designing a program that was not only educational but also accessible and motivating.

Our Approach

Pista Ventures and The Maker Space co-created a curriculum focused on fundamental digital skills, coding, and technology application in entrepreneurship. The program was delivered through a blend of online platforms accessible on mobile devices, community-based workshops, and hands-on projects that encouraged real-world application of skills learned.

Outcomes

The program successfully enrolled hundreds of young individuals, with a significant completion rate. Graduates emerged with not only improved digital literacy but also projects and startups that applied their new skills in innovative ways, contributing to their communities’ economic development.

Learnings

Key learnings included the importance of flexibility in educational delivery, the need for mentorship and community support, and the effectiveness of project-based learning. Engaging local leaders and incorporating local contexts into learning materials also proved to be crucial in improving engagement and retention.

Impact on Skills Development

The initiative demonstrated a scalable model for bridging the digital divide and preparing youth for the future of work. It showed that with the right approach, even learners in the most underserved areas could become proficient in digital skills and use them creatively to solve local problems.

Insights into Teaching Digital Skills

Teaching digital skills in underserved communities requires more than just providing access to technology; it necessitates a holistic approach that addresses barriers to learning, such as language, motivation, and the application of skills in a local context. Hands-on, project-based learning, paired with mentorship, emerged as a highly effective strategy.

Impact on Township & Rural Youth

For many participants, the program was transformative, not just in terms of skill acquisition but also in igniting an interest in technology and innovation. It provided them with the tools to become creators in the digital economy, opening up new pathways for employment and entrepreneurship.

Conclusion

The collaboration between Pista Ventures and The Maker Space, supported by the UNDP, has laid a foundation for a sustainable approach to digital skills development that can be replicated across other communities. By focusing on accessibility, relevance, and engagement, the program has made a significant impact on empowering township and rural youth, showcasing the potential for technology to drive social and economic advancement.
