UX Research: Living Wage for Barista Wage Calculator

Introduction

Pista Ventures undertook a pioneering UX Research project to garner more insights for the Barista Wage Calculator, aiming to address the nuanced and often contentious issue of fair compensation within the coffee industry. This tool, developed by Open Cities Lab and Black Box, was envisioned to help reconcile the diverse needs and perspectives of baristas, café owners, and other stakeholders across the coffee value chain, ensuring equitable wages that reflect both the employee’s qualifications and their living circumstances.

Coffee Value Chain in South Africa

The coffee value chain in South Africa is multifaceted, spanning from bean cultivation and importation to roasting, distribution, and retailing in cafes and roasteries. Each stage adds value and complexity, influencing the economics of the final product and, consequently, the wages of those involved in its sale and preparation, especially baristas.

Our Approach to UX Research

Pista’s approach to user experience (UX) research was comprehensive and multi-pronged:

  • Interviews: Conducting detailed interviews with baristas, café owners, and other key stakeholders to gather insights into their experiences, expectations, and concerns regarding wages.
  • Workshops & Focus Groups: Facilitating collaborative workshops that brought together diverse participants from the coffee value chain to co-create and refine the wage calculator concept.
  • Presentation at Coffee Creative Week: Showcasing the secondary findings and the update of the wage calculator to a wider audience for feedback and validation.

Outcomes

The project led to several key outcomes:

  • Insights for Development: Secondary research contributed to the Barista Wage Calculator, incorporating feedback from various stakeholders.
  • Increased Awareness: Heightened awareness among café owners and the broader industry about the complexities of wage determination and the importance of fair compensation.
  • Community Engagement: Enhanced engagement and dialogue within the coffee community about wage practices and sustainability in the coffee value chain.

Challenges

Several challenges emerged during the project:

  • Diverse Stakeholder Interests: Reconciling the varied interests and financial realities of stakeholders within the coffee industry was challenging.
  • Data Complexity: The complexity of factors affecting wages, including experience, location, and living costs, made it difficult to create a one-size-fits-all tool.
  • Adoption Hesitancy: Some stakeholders were hesitant to adopt the tool, fearing it might increase operational costs. Some interventions were poorly attended and in other instances ignored owing to the sensitivity of a living wage.

Learnings

Key learnings from the project included:

  • Importance of Flexibility: The need for the wage calculator to be adaptable to different scenarios and user needs.
  • Value of Stakeholder Engagement: Engaging with a broad range of stakeholders was crucial in creating a tool that was both practical and equitable.
  • Education and Awareness: The critical role of education in changing perceptions and practices regarding living wages in the coffee industry.

Impact on Decision-Making

The Barista Wage Calculator has had a significant impact on decision-making processes within cafes and roasteries, offering a data-driven tool to support more equitable wage practices.

Insights on Baristas

Research revealed that baristas often feel undervalued and seek clearer paths to career development and fair compensation, emphasizing the need for transparency and fairness in wage determination.

Insights on Cafe Owners

Café owners are balancing the desire to provide fair wages with the need to maintain profitability. They expressed appreciation for a tool that could help navigate these complex decisions.

Insights on Coffee Value Chain

The study highlighted the interconnectedness of the coffee value chain and the importance of considering each stage’s impact on pricing and wages, advocating for a holistic approach to sustainability and fairness.

Economics of Coffee

The research into the economics of coffee underscored the challenge of ensuring fair wages within a competitive market, where price sensitivity can limit wage flexibility.

Conclusion

Pista Ventures’ secondary UX Research of the Barista Wage Calculator represents a significant step forward in addressing the long-standing issue of wage fairness in the coffee industry. By incorporating insights from a broad spectrum of stakeholders and leveraging UX research methodologies, the project has not only produced a practical tool for wage calculation but also fostered a deeper understanding and dialogue around the economics of coffee and the value of labor within the industry. This initiative paves the way for more equitable and sustainable practices, contributing positively to the lives of baristas, the operations of cafes, and the health of the coffee value chain in South Africa and potentially beyond.
